Some of the best young rodeo talent in the state, ages 15-18, will be on display tonight and Saturday at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.
The 15th annual Umpqua Valley High School Rodeo gets under way at 7 tonight in the Pavilion Building and resumes at 7 p.m. Saturday. Special barrel racing and pole bending are scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday in the lower river arena at the fairgrounds.
Cutting competition will be held at 9 a.m. Sunday in Tenmile at Cathey’s Cutting Horses, 1548 Tenmile Valley Road.
Molly Stubblefield, president of the Umpqua Valley High School Rodeo Club, expects close to 300 athletes to take part in the Roseburg rodeo, which kicks off the Oregon spring high school season. Two rodeos were held in the fall in Condon and Morrow.
“We’re excited ... this should be a really good rodeo,” said Stubblefield. “We’ve been working six to seven months to put this on.”
Rodeo events at the fairgrounds include bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, bull riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, team roping, breakaway roping, goat tying, barrel racing and pole bending.
This year’s Umpqua Valley team includes three who competed in the 2006 Oregon High School Rodeo Association State Finals: Stubblefield in breakaway roping and pole bending, Lacy Egli in breakaway roping and goat tying, and Gregory Garcia in tie-down roping and team roping.
Other Umpqua Valley competitors include Jamie Poole in pole bending, barrel racing, goat tying and breakaway roping; Levi Christian and Eddie Swindell in bull riding; Sarah Keller in breakaway roping, goat tying and barrel racing; Grant Garcia in tie-down roping and team roping; and Molly Vredenburg in breakaway roping and team roping.
“We have a great group this year,” Stubblefield said.
Admission to the night sessions of the rodeo is $5. Children 6-and-under are free.
Roseburg is the third stop of 13 prep rodeos that are held during the school year. The top 20 in each event in the regular season qualify for the state finals, which are scheduled for June 14-17 in Klamath Falls.
